Celebrate Canada 150 Bike Ride

Day 30 - Nipigon to Terrace Bay

Friday, June 16, 2017

Today was a little bittersweet for me.  42 years ago I started the "1st Annual Invitational Bass Classic"'for friends, co-workers and family.  The Tradition has continued for the last 41 years.  Today would have marked our 42nd year, but it wasn't from ill health (or death) that I didn't make it, it was by choice.  This unique opportunity to travel across this great country and celebrate its 150th Anniversary and take part in this special activity was something very special.
The FishGuts (some of my best fishing buddies and friends) put this song together a few years ago.  We have not recorded it yet (this is like a demo tape), but I wanted to pay tribute to a bunch of people that are a very important part of my life.
Can't wait till next year.
We stopped in Nipigon to pick up a few supplies.  In doing so we drove past the smallest Canadian Tire in Canada (I remember the original - Canadian Tire - in Grimsby being MUCH smaller than that).
My little rant for today.😏  This is the bridge that collapsed a few years ago and totally shut down the Trans Canada Highway.  A single point of failure!  If you look closely, they are twinning it.  It is also good to see them repairing/replacing several bridges along the route.  Maybe they finally got the message.  Now if they'd just fix up the shoulders.
Today was a very special day.  Every day has been special, but today rivalled the days in the Rockies for spectacular scenery.  Lots of Red Rock in this area.
We stopped in at another Archie's Restaurant (do you remember our last one?) this morning to rendezvous with our cyclers.

Lots of signs here.  The one at the top points to the moon!😆
Iconic Rock cuts!

Tell me that's not a spectacular view!!!!!
 Or this one!

This was at a lookout point.  I wonder how many people took the time to appreciate this view behind them!

We dealt with fog throughout the day.  It resulted in just amazing views like this!  You had to be there to really appreciate it.
Caroline had an amazing ride today.
Look at that climb she did!!!

And here is poor Kim from South Korea (remember him from the other day).  This is the beginning of that massive hill that Caroline climbed.  He had to walk his bike all the way up and with his tiny tires I'm sure he'd have trouble controlling it going down the other side.

Back to Caroline.  She's not far behind Clara Hughes in this segment!!!!
You ROCK girl!!!

This the kind of lunch Ritchie's big sister prepares for him and Caroline every day💕💕💕
This reminded me a bit of our Niagara Escarpment back home.
Ritchie's Day.  That's some serious climbing!
Our destination today was Terrace Bay.  This is Aguasabon Gorge just outside Terrace Bay.  Another awesome sight.
Meet Brittany and Bruno Caumette.  Brittany is from New Brunswick and Bruno is from France.  They met in Mozambique 5 years ago.  Bruno has been once and a half around the world and now they are working on it again.  I admire folks like this. They have a website here Wandering Footsteps
The campground in Terrace Bay shut down a few years ago, so the town allows you to boondock in a few locations, the Gorge, The Tourism parking lot or HERE!!!!
This is where the Aguasabon River rolls into Lake Superior.  One of our most amazing campsites (we've had a few) and its FREE!!!!
Lake Superior shrouded in fog.
Lynn and I hiked up a trail to the bridge you see in the picture above.  Another great view!
If you follow the opening on the left you can see our RV in the distance.  (Don't forget you can enlarge the pictures by double clicking on them....just sayin')😊
 So many special memories.............
