Celebrate Canada 150 Bike Ride

Day 35 - Rest Day in Sault Ste. Marie

Wednesday, June 21, 2017

We met up with Darlene and Don and headed for the Pow Wow after dropping Caroline's bike off at the Velorution Bike Shop, for some adjustments.  The Pow Wow was located on Whitefish Island which is along the old canal.  That's the International Bridge in the background.  We were right down by Algoma Steel.
Ritchie & Caroline met up with a couple of first responders.
This ceremonial dress was beautiful.
The following was the beginning of the Pow Wow.  Chief Dean Sayers that invited us is the one carrying the War of 1812 flag.
Cool native outfits.
We met up with Chief Dean Sayers and he invited us into the teepee for a smudge.
The gentleman below that explained and performed the smudging asked that I not photograph the fire so pictures are limited.

He is showing me the Eagle feathers that he used to wave the smoke towards us.  It was a very neat experience.  A little about smudging here.
Everyone enjoyed the Pow Wow, but we had to leave to pick up Caroline's bike before the store closed.  We passed the old Canal Superintendent's house when this canal was active.  It was a beautiful Sandstone Building.  It is used for weddings and other functions now.
There was a gentleman there using a pinhole camera to take time exposures on 4"x5" negatives.
We got back to the Velorution Bike Store to pick up Caroline's bike.  I was checking up on Denis Paquet's blog (remember him) and read that he was camping behind the bike store (they allow bikers to camp in the bush lot behind their store.  How cool is that!).  I rushed around the back of the store and saw Denis' tent, but no Denis.  I met Keith back there.  He rode his recumbent bike from Vancouver to Thunder Bay last year and is riding from Thunder Bay to St. Johns this year.  I told him to say hi to Denis.
I checked Denis' blog tonight and watched his video from the other side of the Pow Wow!!!!!!
Evidently I missed him by half an hour at his camp site.  Hopefully, we will see him on the road tomorrow.
We returned to our campsite and had a very enjoyable evening.
Ritchie roasted some of his gourmet Smore Marshmallows (patent pending).
We had a couple of great days with Don and Darlene.  They left for their hotel, but hope to see the Cycling Phenom's on the road tomorrow as they head out to catch the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry to Tobermory.
 Another amazing fire!

As you know your going to have some reporting competition as of tomorrow when your big brother gets on the road - lots of entertaining reading for us folks back home.
